The Jefferson House of Flowers named Member of the Month

KOKOMO, Ind. (June 8, 2018) – The Jefferson House of Flowers has been in Kokomo for almost 100 years. Truman Elkins is only the fourth owner of the business.

The business has been named Member of the Month for June by the Greater Kokomo Chamber of Commerce.

Elkins said he purchased the store with the idea of keeping it a cut flower shop, but also had big plans to grow the business. It is now a gift shop with hand-crafted gifts and home décor. He also added a garden center last year with bedding plants, hanging baskets and lawn decor.

“I bought the store because I love Kokomo and the people here,” Elkins said. “This store has been a part of Kokomo for many years, and I wanted to keep the tradition of flowers alive.”

As he and his daughter make additions to the business, their motto has been, “In with the new and not out with the old.” While adding what’s popular and trendy, they’ve also worked hard to keep all the staple services that a flower shop provides.

"The Chamber takes great pride in its many and diverse members. Therefore, it is our pleasure to feature The Jefferson House of Flowers as this June's Member of the Month,” said Kimberly Pinkerton, manager of the Greater Kokomo Chamber of Commerce.

The Jefferson House does wedding and funeral work, everyday arrangements, planters, houseplants and much more. They offer DIY classes where you can learn to make wreaths, crafts, succulent gardens and more.

Kayla Keith, Elkins’ oldest daughter, manages the shop and teaches the classes.

“I so enjoy getting to come to work with my dad every day,” Keith said. “I love this business and can’t wait to see how we keep growing in the future!”

This summer, along with the garden center, they will be adding their own greenhouse. This will give them the ability to grow their own flowers, greens and plants right here in Kokomo. The idea resonates with the business owners because of their belief in shopping small and supporting local businesses. As a small, family-owned business themselves, they see the importance of keeping everything as close to Kokomo as possible.

“They are a fine example of a strong local enterprise which prides itself on its rich historical business foundation; and yet they continue to grow and adapt for the future,” Pinkerton said. “Truman utilizes many of the Chamber benefits, such as our partnership with the Small Business Development Center, to ensure a solid business plan model. We wish him much continued success."

On any given day you can stop in the shop at 4300 W. 100 North, Kokomo, and see Elkins or his daughter — and maybe even his grandsons, Truman and Roman.
