K-Town Chili Throwdown coming to First Friday

There will be plenty happening downtown to keep you running hot and cold as First Friday Kokomo presents Fire & Ice on Friday, Feb. 2.

First, the fire.

Join us for the 5th annual K-Town Chili Throwdown as 17 businesses and organizations battle it out for bragging rights as the best chili in town. From white chili to chocolate chili to pork chili to pumpkin chili and more, downtown businesses and organizations will put their chili-crafting skills to the test while vying for awards.

And you can have a say in those awards! Winners will be chosen in three categories: Judges’ Choice Chili, People’s Choice Chili and People’s Choice Showmanship. Have a taste of all the chili entries as you make your way around downtown locations and then vote for your favorite.

To vote, pick up a map at the Information Booth at Main and Walnut streets when you arrive downtown or find a map at any chili location. You must turn your completed map in at the Information Booth by 8 p.m. in order for your vote to count. You can even watch the officials judging, too. Starting at 5:30 p.m., stop by Kokomo Perspective/Kokomo Herald offices at 209 N. Main St. to observe the judging process.

To combat the heat of the chili, Indiana Ice Studio will conduct ice-sculpting demonstrations from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Rain Garden Plaza at Main and Mulberry streets. Watch as the artist Jeff Petersec carves a fire-breathing dragon.

But wait, there’s more!

The Kokomo-Howard County Public Library will be celebrating Black History Month by inviting you to take a look at the rich, cultural history and influence that early black Americans had on music. There will be opportunities to experience and learn the early influences of jazz, hip hop, and more. Also, students of Wallace School of Integrated Arts will perform a dance from 5:30 to 6 p.m.

You’ll be able to feel the love at Main Street Café, which is hosting artists from Rhum Academy of Music to sing love songs throughout the evening.

Stop by The Studio in the Historic Depot District as its gallery hosts its grand opening. Local artist and co-owner Leah Merrix will showcase original artwork inspired by Pink Floyd's album “Wish You Were Here.” She will have five new pieces on display.

While you’re in the Depot District, stop in at Marble the Steakhouse and help them celebrate their very first First Friday by tasting their Steakhouse Chili!

Another new space in downtown is Mackenzie Lee Photography, which is hosting an Open House Party at its new location in The Coterie building. There will be a professional photo booth, hot chocolate bar and snacks provided by Main Street Cafe, a drink special offered by The Coterie, and giveaways.

The American Heart Association will Paint the Town Red in partnership with the UAW Local 685 Women’s Committee. They’ll have helpful information for you at Wings, Etc.

For more information, visit or find First Friday on social media.
