First Friday packs double punch in May

Get ready for an action-packed First Friday in May! In fact, it will be two First Fridays in one! May marks Fast Friday and Cinco de Mayo, both of which will be celebrated during the monthly event in downtown Kokomo.

From 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 5, downtown Kokomo will be revved up for Fast Friday. Sponsor of the May event, Wings Etc. will host the Fuzzy's Formula One Race Car and kids are encouraged to jump in the driver's seat for a picture. There will also be live entertainment in the restaurant's alley.

Other Fast Friday happenings include:

• An IndyCar will be on display on the west Courthouse lawn, weather permitting. The car will be hosted by the Howard County Board of Commissioners and Secure Business Solutions.

The Kokomo Quarter Midgets Club will have five cars on display.

• Stop by the Very Early Childhood Education Center, 210 W. Walnut, and participate in a race day craft. Also, be on the lookout for Husky, the Ivy Tech Community College mascot, at the corner of Walnut and Buckeye streets.

• Court Appointed Special Advocates of Howard County will have a racetrack set up for Matchbox car races and a racing/CASA themed word search. You'll also have the chance to sign up to be a CASA volunteer or participate in the volleyball tournament.

• Rex Ambrose will have his dragster racing car on display at the United Steelworkers 2958. Also, step inside to check out the many craft and vendors inside as well as participate in a scavenger hunt.

• Blye’s Bridal Shoppe will host Kaden Blount, a race car driver and seventh-grader at Western. He will have on display the car he will race in the 2017 season in Outlaw Wing and A Class for Micro Sprints. Kaden races locally at the U.S. 24 Speedway in Logansport and at Miami County Speedway in Peru. Also, live models will be in the windows featuring black and white formal gowns.

• LeaderOne Financial will have a drawing for free tickets to Kokomo Speedway and a 3 Amigos gift certificate.

For Cinco de Mayo, 3 Amigos will be heating things up with its patio in full swing for a mini block party in celebration of La Batalla de Puebla. Featuring The Mosaicos Folkloric Ballet and DJ Nieto at 8:30 p.m., the patio party will include food and drink specials throughout the evening.

Also, the Kokomo Family YMCA will get the Cinco de Mayo fun started early with a dance-inspired fitness class on the Courthouse Square. In partnership with Bind Cafe and Cook McDoogal's, the YMCA Cinco de Mayo Street Party will be 6 to 9 p.m. on Main Street and will feature a dance fiesta including Zumba, salsa, Cize, hip hop and REFIT.

But wait, there's more! Yes, there's even more happening at First Friday May, including:

• From 7 p.m. to midnight at American Dream Hi-Fi, check out drag performances by Scarlett O Rose and the current reigning Miss Hoosier Queen of Pride, Rachel Sparks. The event is open to all ages, with alcoholic beverages available to those 21 and older. There will be an after-party at The Coterie from midnight to 3 a.m.

• Register for the Kokomo 48-Hour Film Contest at Bind Café. In conjunction with the Hoosierdance International Film Festival, there will be a contest orientation at 6:30 p.m.

• First Baptist Church will be serving free hotdogs.

• The IU Kokomo Union Street Gallery has a new exhibition of student artwork inspired by Sol LeWitt.

• Redeemer Lutheran School will be downtown to talk about the School Choice Program and the scholarships they have available.
