Downtown Briefing set for Sept. 19

*Click here to register for the free event*

The Downtown District Briefing is an opportunity for anyone interested in downtown Kokomo to get involved, be heard or just learn what's happening in downtown.

Hosted by the Greater Kokomo Downtown Association, the event will be 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, in the Community Room of The Train Depot, 500 N. Buckeye St.

In addition to having a chance to share their insights and ideas for downtown Kokomo, those attending will hear from Jim Walker, CEO and lead artist for Big Car Collaborative. Walker has led the nonprofit arts and community development organization’s work bringing placemaking efforts to the cities of Lafayette and West Lafayette, the Indiana State Fair and Indianapolis City Market. Big Car will soon begin work in Fort Wayne as well.

His talk will explore what placemaking and community art are really all about, offering examples of his past and current work. He will also focus on the role in cities of all sizes for placemaking and art designed to support social connections between people. As a lifelong Hoosier, he's especially interested in how this work can support positive momentum in communities — like Kokomo — that are reinventing themselves amidst many changes in technology, industry and society.

The evening will begin with a social hour from 5:30 to 6:25 p.m. Attendees are invited to meet their neighbors and enjoy complementary specialty pizza by Oscar's Pizza and "No Ordinary Adult Beverages" from Tin Man Brewing.

The presentations will get underway at 6:25 p.m., beginning with downtown updates and announcements with Susan Alexander, manager of the Greater Kokomo Downtown Association. After Walker’s presentation, there will be time for questions.

There’s no cost to attend, but organizers are asking those wishing to attend to register. Register here.
