Community Concerns with Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
- Pharmaceutical manufacturing plants release toxic air emissions, liquid effluents, and solid waste to the surrounding environment.
- Acceptable emission levels may still cause serious damage to streams and rivers depending on their functionality. Additionally, plants have to achieve below the maximum value for at least 95% of their annual operating hours.
- Community concerns need to be taken into consideration especially in rural areas where farming is the most prevalent industry in the community.
- A recent study by John Hopkins University found that 80% of streams tested contained antibiotics, steroids, synthetic hormones, or other common drugs.
