Historic Gymnasium to be Renovated

Kokomo High School's historic Memorial Gymnasium is set to be renovated and become the home of Indiana University Kokomo basketball and volleyball. The schools are partnering with the city on the project.
 
Indiana University Kokomo, Kokomo-Center Schools and the City of Kokomo will partner on a project to renovate Kokomo High School’s historic Memorial Gymnasium. Beginning with the 2013-14 athletic season, Memorial Gym will be the permanent home court for all IU Kokomo women and men’s basketball and women’s volleyball games.

Kokomo Lands “Next Generation” Health and Rehabilitation Community

Kokomo Mayor Greg Goodnight announced plans for a $13.8 million health and rehabilitation community  to be built on the City’s west side by Cicero-based Mainstreet Property Group. 

“Mainstreet’s investment in Kokomo will provide immediate construction employment opportunities and permanent jobs for health care workers,” said Mayor Goodnight. “This new facility will transform rehabilitation care by meeting the wellness and social needs of today’s assisted living residents.”

Kokomo Railroad to Receive New Life

More than 10 miles of dormant Kokomo area railroad will soon reopen. Mayor Greg Goodnight says the $5.5 million project will restore a railway which has been inactive since 1997. Kokomo Grain Co., U.S. Rail Corp. and Norfolk Southern Corp. (NYSE: NSC) are partnering on the project, which the mayor says will be an important economic development tool.

The Kokomo/Howard County Convention and Visitors Bureau launched the final market test of the Visit Kokomo™ mobile app for iPhone® and iPad® devices last week. The CVB staff, in conjunction with the Visitors Council Marketing Committee, moved quickly with the project to have it available for visitors staying overnight in Kokomo during Super Bowl weekend.

917 more county residents in 2011 had jobs than in 2010

About 900 more Howard County residents had jobs by the end of 2011 than they did a year before.

There were 36,656 county residents working as of December, the Indiana Department of Workforce Development reported Tuesday.
